This sounds like SE is trying to staff up for FF17's development now that FF16 is finishing up, and is using the 150~ devs from Luminous to first start out, since there really isn't any other team in the other CBU's that are free to be making FF17.ĬBU1 currently has FF7R-2, FF7R-3, KH4, a new AAA IP that's been in development for over 4 years by this point, various other smaller non AAA games.ĬBU2 isn't on any AAA, mostly AA and A level stuff with DQ, Nier, Team Asano games.ĬBU3 has FF16, FF14 expansions, some smaller non projects, and also has development on a new engine called Radec Engine, which based on tech presentations is the engine FF16 is using and is a modified FF14 engine, which itself was a sister engine to Luminous Engine. Now based on the wording the 150~ staff are just going back to being able to make AAA games now from SE's existing range of AAA IP, that being Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts which are the only AAA IP SE have left, (Dragon Quest can hardly be considered AAA budget wise just because it sells well.) In May 2022, Square Enix announced that it was selling its entire Eidos group and IPs to Embracer, generating $1.4 billion in cash and zero debtĬlick to expand.I think a key part that should be specified is that Luminous Productions purpose from November 2018 was specifically to make AAA new IP only, not working on existing IP, and that even despite being an "external company", they operated on the same exact office floor that Business Division 2 operated on during FFXV's development, they weren't like in a separate building or anything, and even now they're still on that same office floor since when they were Business Division 2.Square believes Luminous's technical proficiency will aid the overall parent company in the development of HD games. As of today (Feb 28, 2023), Square has decided to assimilate the Luminous Studio staff into the parent company. In January 2023, Forspoken was released to lukewarm reviews.

As part of this effort, Square would retain ownership of some of its studios, share ownership of others, and sell others off entirely. In August 2022, it was revealed that this was part of a larger restructuring effort to "improve capital efficiency" at Square Enix.In May 2022, Square Enix announced that it was selling all of Eidos (and IPs) to Embracer, leaving them with $1.4 billion in cash and zero debt.Luminous ramped up to 150 employees (as of June 2020) to work on the game.Around this time, studio head and FF15 director Hajime Tabata left Luminous and all remaining FF15 DLC was cancelled. Then, in November 2018 Square Enix announced that Luminous's focus would shift to just AAA game development.
